friends, food, and the wonderful thing about small cameras
This post is the product of a rediscovered addiction for jasmine tea, a decreased caffeine tolerance and subsequent insomnia. Today I picked up a developed roll of film from my latest disposable camera, and as usual was humored by the photos that had accumulated over the past few months - months, as I have become a bit of a slug when it comes to picture taking. One thing is certain - I lack the amateur-dslr-owner enthusiasm that I exuded at the age of sixteen when my Canon 400D followed me wherever I went, regardless of convenience or portability. Nowadays, my camera is brought solely to events worthy of a camera, or is confined to my kitchen, reserved for taking debatably boring photos of my breakfast at different angles. Unfortunately, for me, the best photos are usually neither of (albeit delicious) omelettes nor of forced-pose-party-group-shots, but ones that document sporadic moments and day to day happenings. And here is where my rediscovered appreciation for small cameras comes into play. I recently put my wee-little-point-and-shoot from 2007 (or something ridiculous) back into use, and was thrilled by its portability! So, as usual, I am making it a goal to document (visually) this summer with more diligence! This should presumably result in the more frequent updates, but I think it's safe to say that this is something that is less than likely. But to illustrate the wonderful thing about small cameras, here is a post devoted entirely to photos taken by them, bits and pieces of the past year:
And, since the title of this post promised food, a small ending note on fish: after years of openly disliking fish and all of its fishiness, I have decided to "grow up" and learn to like it. A first step was a spontaneous fish burger I had the other day at a small little restaurant called Comptoir 21 in the Mile End which was extremely tasty!
aaaaand to finish, some throwback disposable favorites from long, long ago:

My short lived obession with couscous salad.
This summer has been one of sweltering heat. I am fortunate enough to be living on top of a barber shop this summer - albeit one that is open only two days a week - but these are two glorious days of the week, because the air conditioning that comes from downstairs seems to miraculously leak into my unit.
However, the other five days are pretty torturous, and I have found myself escaping to Starbucks far too often not just for their internet or coffee, but for their air conditioning. The heat has also discouraged me from using any appliance that will produce heat of any sort - in short, I use the stove or oven as little as possible (which is kind of gross when you think of it - I will have you know that I have not been living solely off microwaveable foods!) Rather, I ate a whole lot of salad for two weeks straight. Specifically, couscous salad.
Growing up in a Chinese household, I never had heard of couscous until I was probably eighteen. If I let my parents try it now, I highly doubt they would know what it is. However, I soon discovered its goodness in so many forms! Having couscous as one of the main components of my salad made them more filling (breakfast-lunch-and-dinner material!), not to mention it was extremely quick to prepare, and was extremely refreshing to eat during a hot day.
Generally, my salad consisted of:
- cooked couscous (1-2 cups - prepared according to package0
- cherry tomatoes, diced
- cucumber, diced
- corn kernels
- lemon juice
- olive oil
- balsamic vinegar
Mix it all together and TADA, an oh-so-delicious salad!
