things i've eaten (cooked) this summer: may & june edition

Soft boiled egg on toast with avocado & spinach (taken from this Smitten Kitchen recipe)
Lemon garlic flat roasted chicken with roasted vegetables (these are the left overs, looking surprisingly tasty even when sitting in tupperware!) Chicken recipe taken from Shutterbean (highly recommend it!)
An omelette a day keeps the doctor away!! (This is a most untrue statement, for my almost-daily omelettes are loaded with salt, butter, and lots of cheese - as well as mushroom, asparagus, red pepper, onion & whatever else I happen to fancy before heading off to work...)
Extra protein chili! I often add quinoa as a ground beef replacement when I make vegetarian chili, but this time, I decided to go all out and combine ground beef and quinoa, in addition to kidney beans and chickpeas, zucchini, corn & red pepper.
Curry fried rice! I tried this for the first time a couple of nights ago after seeing my roommate make it a few times. Ingredients included: jasmine rice, cumin, curry powder, edamame, asparagus, red pepper, scallions, 2 eggs (beaten & fried), & mushroom.
A plant sitting on my friend's balcony! I did not eat this.

airports, trains, metros, & some places in between.

I have been a tired person lately.  For various reasons, I have found myself shuffling back and forth between provinces and cities, and if the past few weeks have taught me anything, it's that I am certainly not suitable for a future career which requires frequent traveling.  These photos were all taken on an iphone (edited with Photoshop CS5), which seems to have replaced my trusty Canon due to the fact that I always have it on me - also, that it can do things my dSLR cannot (mainly, taking secret photos of passersby without drawing attention).

friends, food, and the wonderful thing about small cameras

This post is the product of a rediscovered addiction for jasmine tea, a decreased caffeine tolerance and subsequent insomnia.   Today I picked up a developed roll of film from my latest disposable camera, and as usual was humored by the photos that had accumulated over the past few months - months, as I have become a bit of a slug when it comes to picture taking.  One thing is certain - I lack the amateur-dslr-owner enthusiasm that I exuded at the age of sixteen when my Canon 400D followed me wherever I went, regardless of convenience or portability.  Nowadays, my camera is brought solely to events worthy of a camera, or is confined to my kitchen, reserved for taking debatably boring photos of my breakfast at different angles.  Unfortunately, for me, the best photos are usually neither of (albeit delicious) omelettes nor of forced-pose-party-group-shots, but ones that document sporadic moments and day to day happenings.  And here is where my rediscovered appreciation for small cameras comes into play. I recently put my wee-little-point-and-shoot from 2007 (or something ridiculous) back into use, and was thrilled by its portability!   So, as usual, I am making it a goal to document (visually) this summer with more diligence!  This should presumably result in the more frequent updates, but I think it's safe to say that this is something that is less than likely.   But to illustrate the wonderful thing about small cameras, here is a post devoted entirely to photos taken by them, bits and pieces of the past year:

And, since the title of this post promised food, a small ending note on fish: after years of openly disliking fish and all of its fishiness, I have decided to "grow up" and learn to like it.  A first step was a spontaneous fish burger I had the other day at a small little restaurant called Comptoir 21 in the Mile End which was extremely tasty!

aaaaand to finish, some throwback disposable favorites from long, long ago:
